Campaign Description
From Prison Walls to University Halls
"It's not just to give people fish. Guide them to pick the fish from the river themselves."
— Mahfuz Alabidun, founder, Inmates Educational Foundation
Beyond Your Title sat down with Mahfuz Alabidun for our podcast episode Inside the Walls.
He shared the story that started his work. A man left prison, found a job and lost it the moment his boss learned about his past. With no support and nowhere to turn, his second chance slipped away almost as soon as it began.
Mahfuz realised that people need more than a handout when they walk free.
They need the tools to provide for themselves. For eight years, he has worked inside Nigeria's correctional centres to give them exactly that, and education is where it starts.
The fishing rod
A NECO certificate is that first fishing rod. It opens the door to university, to skills training and to work that can carry someone through life after prison.
Since 2018, IEF has helped more than 500 inmates across six correctional facilities sit NECO/GCE. Many have earned As, Bs and Credits and gained admission to the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). Some are now undergraduates, Master's students and PhD candidates, studying while still incarcerated. They are already learning to fish.
Our part
When we asked Mahfuz what ordinary professionals could do, he said, "Every profession is needed in the prison." BYT exists to help professionals turn what they have into active contribution, so we are taking him at his word.
Together with IEF, we are raising ₦1,750,000 to put fishing rods in the hands of 50 incarcerated learners.
What ₦35,000 gives one learner
